Crater Bailly

Hi all,

these days I started thinking that cloud-spotting would be a good alternative hobby crazy.gif . In the end, the clouds somewhat left yesterday evening and I set up my telescope on the terrace. I had to wait until about 11 p.m. until the moon raised over the roof of the neighbour’s house.

So I had a first look and picked the crater Bailly - with its 300km diameter the largest crater on the near-side of the moon - far in the southwest as sketching target for the evening. During sketching I had to interrupt work two times since clouds blocked my view. So the sketching was not that relaxing how it could have been. But anyway, here’s the result:

Telescope: Celestron Nexstar 127 SLT with Amici prism
Eyepiece: TS HR Planetary 7mm
Date & Time: July 29th, 2015 / 2300-0000 CEST
Location: Home terrace, Dusseldorf region (Germany)
Technique: Chalk and Charcoal pencils on black sketching sketching paper (180g/sqm)
References: Sky & Telescope Field map of the Moon, Rükl Mondatlas

With favourable libration and terminator yesterday evening, Nectarian crater Bailly was visible as large oval with a well-structured floor. If it would be located further “in the middle” of the moon’s near-side it would provide a view at least comparable with the wonderful Clavius.
It northeastern rim is interrupted by the satellite crater Bailly A. Satellite crater Bailly B with its black floor and sunlit rim located on the main crater's floor was an eye-catcher as well.

The smaller secondary craters on the floor of the main crater were not that easy to spot and distinguish. Due to the low angle of the sunlight on the floor, the whole area appeared pretty hilly with a wonderful mixture of brighter and darker areas smile.gif . Within that I could identify the secondary craters Bailly F and D.

Clear skies!

Hi happy-kat

as per "Moore: Craters of the Near Side Moon", crater Bailly E is located in the northwestern corner of the main crater at the rim. In the sketch, it would have been right of the shadowed area on the top left corner of the crater.  But I didn't spot it ;)

What is not labeled in the sketch is crater Bailly G - that's the little bright "hook" at the northern rim.

Cheers

Achim
