Stick or Twist TV Plossl to SLV's

Hi,

It's just a thoughts that going round in my head at the moment, however it makes a lot of sense..

I have 8mm, 11mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm & 32mm televue plossl's as well as a 6mm & 9mm SLV..

Now I love the TV Plossl's but the added eye relief of the SLV means i more regularly go with the SLV over the 8mm and 11mm

So I've been thinking sell the Televue and buy the 12mm, 15mm, 20mm, and 25mm SLV (maybe keep the 32mm TVP) and it wouldn't cost me an huge outlay new...

Is this daft or perfectly sensible, other than eye relief would i really be giving up on sharpness, tone etc..

thoughts are welcome..

Thanks

Fozzie

Hi Fozzie, personally I like good eye-relief and to be comfortable whilst viewing in the cold winter months is a priority for me (I have BST Explorers for this 'easy' viewing). The SLV's have a good reputation and are sharp right to the edge.  I see you are also a fan of the ES82's and I also have a gaggle of them, love them to bits, great both in your 4" frac and 200P.

I don't think you would be giving anything up in terms of image quality going from TV Plossls to SLV's. If you want a bit more comfort, ER, and a large eyelens to peer through then it might be the way to go.

I have not used the SLV but have read John report on these a couple of times, I have just 2 TV Plossl's and I have to say the 11mm I find a bit tight which actually stopped me getting the 8mm.

The good thing is with the sale, if you decide to, TV's will move quickly I would think as they are always popular and I often see wanted adverts.

I'm fairly confident that this is a comfort issue after using the SLV's..

It all started with some WL viewing, the 9mm SLV was a tad too much, but the 11 mm TVP left me thinking I wish I had a 12mm SLV... the seed got it's roots at that point...

The 14mm with a full moon in the frac and the orion neb in the 200p from a dark site.... lovely stuff  :icon_salut:

Same Alan, the 8mm gave me a cracking M13 from the lake district but it is tight, the 11mm im good with at the moment..

I've also been a good boy and kept all boxes, caps and some paperwork with them so defiantly should go quickly..

Thanks for the replies..

Hi Fozzie,

I would sell 8mm, 11mm, 15mm.

Then, if the 25mm is not used much because of a direct jump from 32mm to 20mm, I would sell the 25mm too.
The 20mm has a good eye relief, but if you feel this is still tight for you, then I would replace it with a 20mm slv.
Then, if you feel a gap between 9mm and 20mm, I would possibly add a 12mm slv
All these steps gradually though.
Just my 2p opinion,
Piero

That's just given me an interesting thought..

I have no problems with the 15mm upwards, and I spent an entire evening on Saturday viewing with just the 25mm which I really enjoyed..

My big problem is I do like "sets" shall we say... so it would all or nothing at this juncture...

so maybe the solution is just to buy a 12mm SLV and keep all the plossls, knowing that the 8mm and 11mm might not get the use they really deserve  :undecided:

I've used the 20mm, 12mm and 6mm Vixen SLV's and I'd rate them just a little better optically than the Tele Vue plossls (which I also really like) to be honest with you. Add to that the 20mm of eye relief and the twist up and down eye cups and the SLV's score more points.

I'm in a very similar position as I've got the 15 and 32mm TVPs as well as the 6mm SLV, but now I'm thinking about filling in the gaps. In the interests of cheapness I'm currently drifting towards the plossls, and will probably end up taking a punt on the 11mm to see if I can get on with it before deciding on the 8mm. They have a very simple and robust feel over the SLVs which oddly appeals to me, although this has no impact on the quality of view whatsoever. But if you are finding yourself reaching for the SLV over the plossls then I think your mind is already made up. So if you can cope with the idea of not having a complete set (I feel your pain!) then yes simply throwing a 12mm SLV onto the table would leave you with all bases covered and comfortable eye relief across the range.

Now I'm a step closer it's even more tempting to twist..

Or you could throw your cards and ask for a new hand...

...sell all your Plossls and SVLs and buy a set of TV Delites?

You're a very naughty man Derek :D I think if he sold his EP's he might be able to affored 1.5 -2 Delites ;)

I'll bear that in mind and give you a first refusal... It was going to BRT but I see in his sig that he's sourced one already..

Although, and this gives some insight into how my brain plays with me  , I've recently had the idea that a full set of nice plossl's will make a great gift for my boy Oli, he's only 9 months now, but he's already got a evo90 waiting for him when he's old enough and if he shows an interest... But then my brain goes "well by the time he's 7 or 8 and interested you'll probably have moved on to better than the SLV's, so why not gift those instead!?"

That way a set of really nice EP's doesn't get boxed up and put in the loft for too long a time.  Just like the idea of giving him a great set of green and black, seems more prestigious some how..

It just goes round and round and round and round..

I predict this will end up with two full sets of 50 deg Ep's and a very grumpy wife!  (but happy father and son in 8 years time)

I'll DM you if I make the plunge..

Thanks

Fozzie

I understand the pull of a complete set - so nice to have the whole family together!

Best of luck with your decision :)

Wonder what gems will be available to Oli when he's old enough - TeleVue De-licious, Vixen OMGs...?

Probably have contact-lens ep's by then :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to close this thread.. I'm really pleased with the decision, I've only had a bit of time with them but (sky conditions apart as they must be very good at the moment) I'm picking up more detail and contrast with these than the TVP's.. Just had a fantastic view of m13 with the 15mm slv & 200p, the veil also jumped out in the 25mm better than in the TVP... I like these a lot

Might add the 5mm and 10mm for a full house!
