Hi all relatively new to Astronomy I have a StarBlast 80mm from Orion without the Syn scan hand controller!!
Has anyone had any luck using Stellarium to drive the scope without the $420 hand controller???

Does it have a handset at present - not the Synscan one but another?

Ask as often the connections are scope <-> handset <-> laptop+stellarium.

In effect stellarium plugs into the handset.

May have changed but that was how some used to operate.

Another question is which handset do you need the V3 or V4.

$420 seems a bit over the top, on Astroboot here there is a V3 Synscan for £69 (~$100)

The Starblast uses the same mount as the Skywatcher Virtuoso so you can control it from a laptop using a bluetooth connection http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/239925-skywatcher-heritage-virtuoso-controlled-via-bluetooth/page-4?hl=%2Bheritage#entry2686147. The latest v3 handset is $420 but you might be able to track down a used v3 handset for less.

You'll need to get a 2nd hand bluetooth connector - I emailed that site a few weeks back when a cheap £50 virtuouso mount came up but they're no longer making them

That was just one option for bluetooth control. There is another module available here http://www.ursaminor.hu/products_en.htmlor a diy version  http://www.kolor.com/wiki-fr/action/view/T%C3%AAte_astronomique_Multi-fonctions_Merlin_Interface?action=view&title=T%C3%AAte_astronomique_Multi-fonctions_Merlin_Interface or https://sites.google.com/site/rwgastro/supatrakmounthacking

Thanks for the reply currently NO the scope was a gift from my wife and the kit came without a hand controller but I checked the scope kit price and the hand control is about $100 more the the whole scope. Not sure what version it needs but thanks for pointing that out
