2" adaptor

I have a 4" refractor with 500mm FL and a 1.25" EP. I'm starting to understand this offers a better FOV than a slower scope, but should i look to maximise this by buying a 2" adaptor for even bigger FOV? I appreciate it depends on how much money i have to spend but are the benefits significantly better than sticking with standard 1.25" EPs?

Just thought, rather than an adaptor would the purchase of a new 2" diagonal make sense? My head is spinning from the range of permutations possible - i think it's because it's it doesn't get late until midnight so i'm spending all my time researching a new subject rather than getting out there viewing!

You will need a 2" diagonal to use 2" eyepieces.

The advantage of 2" eyepieces is that they can show a wider field of view in the longer focal length than a 1.25" eyepiece in the same focal length. There is not a quality benefit as such, just a wider view.

If you go to a 2" diagonal you can still use your 1.25" eyepieces with it as most 2" diagonals come with a 2" - 1.25" adapter.

If you look at some of the eyepiece sets in the "show us your eyepiece case" thread you will see that many folks use just 1 or 2 2" eyepieces and the rest are 1.25".

That makes sense, so it acts as another string for your bow (so to speak)? I wasn't sure if i would need to buy a new diagonal or if i could just get an adaptor which fitted the existing 1.25"

You can actually get an adapter to allow 2" eyepieces to be fitted into a 1.25" diagonal / focuser but by doing so you loose the wide field of view that they give because the 1.25" part of the adapter cuts the field of view down to what a 1.25" eyepiece would have. So it's a little pointless.
