Jupiter transit across the sun.

Recommended Posts

Jupiter will "align" with the Sun at this time and would (if only we could see it) appear to pass across just above the Sun's disc.  This is merely a line of sight effect as Jupiter is actually on the far side of its orbit as seen from earth.  So we have the alignment Earth, Sun, Jupiter.  We will not be able to see Jupiter with normal amateur equipment as the Sun is far too bright.

I hope this simple diagram helps (I have omitted the other planets for clarity):

I suppose that in theory you could see Jupiter occulted by the Sun ... ? ... if Jupiter just happened to be in the right place at the moment of totality during a Total Eclipse of the Sun ... though the odds of everything and everyone being in the right place at the right time are pretty astronomical , excuse the pun ...
