Never mind light pollution, what about cloud pollution?

Arose to what should have been a clear sky, but this is what I found!

To the South:  post-40604-0-47699800-1436016749.jpg

and   post-40604-0-56057100-1436016814.jpg

To the East:   post-40604-0-48025200-1436016753.jpg

and   post-40604-0-28724800-1436016755.jpg

and to the North:   post-40604-0-91553000-1436016756.jpg

The E-W air corridor, Green 1, going into Heathrow or over-flying it, lies some miles to the south, and there is a N-S air corridor above me! And I can't see it getting any better

Plenty of blue bits to squint through there , a much better sky than some poor souls further West and North have to suffer ...

Well that may be true I suppose, but given that this is 08.30am there's not a lot of blue in the East :sad2:

I'd observe the Sun in those conditions. Them there contrails quickly drift away.........depending on the wind. Its natural cloud cover you have to worry about.

I'm new to solar observing, but my main concern is that they don't so much drift away but spread to form a general upper level haze. May be that isn't as much of an issue as I think it is. It does seem to depend on atmospheric conditions though - this morning seemed particularly bad but later in the day the trails seemed to dissipate (or perhaps there were fewer of them!). I remember that following the 9-11 attack and aircraft were grounded, the solar insolation was significantly higher. Perhaps that's not relevant, though.
