Sluggish nights and the astronomers shoe

Am I the only one who sits still in the dark and damp long enough for slugs to crawl over my shoes - or is it an accepted hazard of the trade ?   Second time this week.  The first, I felt something cold and reached down to find the largest slug I've ever seen about to transit from my shoe leather into my sockless ankle.  The shock of touching initially unidentified cold slime in the dark provoked an instinctive standing response, the vibration from which wrecked my M57 sub.  My other animal issues have included red spiders getting into the filter wheel and, while in California, skunk patrols.  Feel free to share your own nocturnal animal intimidations.

I have six cats who love it when I am out with the scope. If I stand up they are all on my seat, its got a cushion on it. And all the cables from my scope to the laptop all start shaking at various times of the night as the little reprobates pull on anything they can get there paws on. Would'nt swap it for the world. All my cats are black so I cannot see them at all, unless one walks across laptop keyboard....

Yeah, they say it's unlucky if a black cat walks across your keyboard.

Hedgehogs and bats usually keep me company, and the occasional owl. I think I'm glad my companions aren't slimy.

We get owls too, bursting into conversation for no apparent reason.  Also what I suspect is the sound of stoats killing rabbits.  Comes of living in a wood - with a hole for the sky.

Speaking of California, We've had a couple of issues with skunks at night. They are not confrontational, so if you just make some noise it will move out of your way; but then there's that lingering scent.

Most of the time I find it's a possum that's nosing around. Caught this one in a live coyote trap, then let him go on his way. The critter became a regular visitor for awhile.
