Can I mix the subs

Recommended Posts

I am in the middle of taking some subs and started off taking them 30 sec long, after about 50 I decided to change this to 3 min subs and alter the ISO, I am halfway through the 2nd lot now (going to take about 40) My question is can I add them all together in DSS even though I have altered the time and the ISO, I will be taking some darks on the 2nd lot of subs, If not I will discard the first set

yes you can,

there is a little tab called group1 right in the bottom of dss that appears when you add your first set wich stays in the main group, you add your second set(the one with different exposures, iso, etc) there. if you add files to group 1, it will create a group 2 and so on. after you added the files you choose entropy weighted average.

i guess will be better if you make two separate stacks and blend it later with gimp or photoshop.

The group tabs in DSS is more widely used for subs of the same exposure but requiring different sets of calibration frames. If you're using the same flats, bias and darks it will just stack them all together as if they were in one tab.

Personally when the exposure is so different I would stack them separately and then use the HDR Composition tool in Pixinsight to blend them together. If you post your images I'm sure some more specific advice would be forthcoming.

Well I had a go last night of the iris nebula, the reason being it was the darkest looking part of the sky for me with the moon out. I do realise I am wasting my time as far as imaging is concearned but its all practise for the darker nights. I put them into two groups and just let DSS do its thing. Total exp 2hrs
