I read somewhere the other day but cant for the life of me remember where, Someone had asked how to polar align before the north star is visible as he wanted to shoot jupiter and venus , and someone replied  "just do a solar system alignment". I have never heard of this before so does any one know what that is and how you would go about it?  Apologies if its a stupid question

This may or may not help, Celestron Nexstar gives you the option from the outset to choose which alignment method you want, eg 3 star, 2 Star, polar and Solar System. So I would choose Solar, choose my planet, get it in the viewfinder manually the align to it. Maybe your scope will give you the same options from the start.
