Dobsonian astrophotography setup question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

It's been a while since I used this forum, but I need some advice please:

I have an 8" dobsonian which I have owned for about 12 months now and love the simplicity and ease of use with it.  After using it to observe Saturn a few nights ago I had my first proper "WOW" moment I really wished I could take a picture of it (oh no! not another noob question about astrophotography!! :p)

Yes, yes, yes, I know this has been covered a gazillion times before..., but I would like to know how to attach my Canon EOS-M camera to my dob, this seems an easier process with a "proper" dSLR.  I have read a few articles and seen a video online, but I was wondering if any of you nice people could give me a few pointers as to what equipment/adapters I need please?

I guy on youtube used a barlow lens connected to a 1.25" nose-piece adapter connected to a t-ring adapter which was attached to his Nikon dSLR to get the focus!!  That looked great, but the only snag I have is my mirror-less camera?!

Sorry for the daft question and I know dobs aren't great for astrophotography, I just want to see if it would be achievable without needing to re-mortgage my house!!

Many thanks in advance.

Rick.

You need a t-ring for the DSLR, then basically this t-ring goes into the focuser, where the eyepiece usually goes.

The "nose piece" may be required, not sure.

Slightly doubtful that the DSLR will make it to the image plane created by the scope, so the mirror may need to be moved up the scope and then recollimated.

I will repeat the normal and say that dobsonians are not suited to AP, really the requirement is an motorised equitorial mount and preferable a small scope. You may not get very far.
