Orion Starshoot G3 and debayering with Nebulosity

Recommended Posts

Up to now, I have been using the Orion Camera Studio software that comes with the camera.  Now I'm trying to get Nebulosity working. So I captured a bunch of raws using Nebulosity and I'm stuck at debayering (or demosaic).

I tried all of the demosaic options possible using the Edit / preferences in Nebulosity.  I tried each one and ran Demosiac and it always left obvious red/green bands across my images using any of the available options.

So I got the idea from reading online that since my camera uses CMYG bayer pattern, that its better to use the manual demosaic options in Nebulosity where there is a CMYG option.

Some users said that CMYG(4) or CMYG(6) are ideal for my camera, but i have no idea how this translates into the little boxes under manual demosaic in Nebulosity.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

From what I found, I am sure you're correct.  But I'm not sure how to apply this in Nebulosity.  So far. the only software I can find that will successfully debayer my images is the Orion Camera Studio.  I wish I could find someone who has successfully used this camera with Nebulosity.

Hello Don , I use nebulosity for doing all my processing for the Orion G3 colour camera , what I do is save my raw images to a folder then I use nebulosity to process , I have some great results in my opinion , this post might be a little late but give it a try if you haven't , also I do not use Nebulosity for my capture use the Orion Studio for that  just make a folder and go from there hope this helps , if you need more help get back to me as this is a great starter camera

Just to close the chapter on this, I was able to do it by setting the debayer algorithm to VNG under edit preferences, and turn off "manual override" checkbox.  This will give the best results I've been able to obtain.  Using the override checkbox will pop up a window after selecting debayer.  I had this going for a while and even though I was choosing CMYG, just pressing OK on the window would give me results that were much too orange instead of red.  By turning off the override checkbox in preferences, you don't get that extra window and the reds look much better, but still more of a shade of pink.  This is the best I've been able to get so far.

Now I'm moving away from Nebulosity and heading towards Sequence generator pro.  Great software because it handles my motorized focuser so nicely, but now its putting me back in the same boat I was in before.  When I try to debayer, it pops up the window even though override is off.  I may have to stop using Neb for debayer and use something else.  In my original post, I mentioned CMYG(4) and (6).  These are settings under Deep Sky Stacker and I wasn't terribly clear about that in the first post.  I may revisit DSS now that I need a good way to debayer.

Hi Don, i realise it's an old post now but did you have any further updates on this?  I'm having similar issues with debayering in Neb 4.2 - I tried your suggestions above but no joy.  The Orion Camera Studio app lets me do colour conversion file by file but crashes on alignment/stacking so not usable.
