Skyshed Pod - Alarm

Folks,

Im after a bit of advice - just found out that my next door neighbor had some thief's in his back garden last night, they never got anything, they somehow got disturbed. Anyway, I have a 6ft garden gate that is padlocked BUT.... due to the houses being built on a bit of a hill the fence in next doors garden is only about 3ft high and it sits on top of a wall - easy enough for somebody to get into his garden, then simply step over the fence onto the wall and into may garden and Skyshed Pod!

So.... I'm after some form of alarm, when it's closed, it's locked, I'm gonna buy a clasp padlock thingy tonight as well to enhance that but what to do when it's open and imaging and I'm in bed?  Just wondered if anybody has any experience of those stand alone PIR sensors?  Thinking of sticking one inside a pod bay looking into the Obsy, that way I presume it wont be triggered unless somebody is inside the pod but just wondered about false alarms etc when the dome is open?

I use triple tech units in the obs  this is a wireless one .. http://homeprotect.me/shop/triple-tech-pir-motion-detector/ ... They combine 3 different detection technologies in the same detector unit...

Also have the loudest 155-120dB  sound bomb you can find in the obs they make it really unpleasant to be in there when they are sounding..

Just thinking about maintaining good relations with the neighbours - I know the first priority is to alert you and scare off the potential thieves  but would it be worthwhile putting the sounder/alarm in the house rather than the Sky Pod.  That way you won't wake up half the neighborhood at 3 am - particularly embarrassing if a false alarm.  Of course the draw back with my idea is that you would need some other deterrent in the pod to scare away the muppets - maybe a light or a more subdued alarm.  I haven't thought this all through - just a thought!

blinky, just looked at your astrophotography in your blog, your galaxy photographs are fantastic.  I'm envious.

Thanks very much!

I am thinking about getting an alarm that sends a text message, saw one for around £50, that way, as you say, I wont wake the neighbors at 3am!

The sound bomb is on the "main" alarm for when the obs is locked up...

If your after something to alert you rather than deter a tea leaf then have a look at some of the wireless PIR "door chimes" ..

I used to modify cheap shed alarms - turning them into  loop alarms like they use in retail outlets... and thread the loop through the kit when it was outside...

I have triple alarms on mine. Built in redundancy in case one fails.

For obvious reasons its not the best security policy to disclose details on an open forum

Agreed - especially the specifics...  The triple tech sensors cope well with the temperature changes in the obs...
