PST unboxing and a question

Recommended Posts

My PST arrived and I was able to unbox it at home. The tax man has paid for it, or rather I did in the form of overpaid tax.

I was quite impressed with the packaging standard and all seemed OK.

I quickly mounted it on a tripod and gave it a quick go at yesterday afternoon's sun.

The supplied 20mm Kelner is not much to speak of so I used my tried and trusted Baader 8-24mm zoom and a 9mm Celestron X-Cel both of which gave good results.

I was treated to a nice display of prominences, one of which was forming a beautiful looping structure. Once I have the L bracket for my Vixen Porta then the will be even more fun.

All in all I am well impressed and look forward to some good observations.

OK the question: The tuning ring seems to worked well and rotates freely with just the right amount of stiffness. However it does seem a bit loose in that it can move up and down the OTA tube by a few millimetres.  Is this normal?

Glad you are enjoying the views, a good PST is great fun.

I don't recall my etalon adjustment moving up and down as much as a few mm, but I did have issues with the adjustment range. You can remove the rubber grip from the adjustment ring and may find a way of tightening it up underneath.

Thanks everyone.

Itching to get home to have another play this evening before observing the Jupiter/Venus conjunction.

I have an adapter on order that will allow a bit of focus adjustment when I use my camera. I saw a piece on You Tube suggesting that the focus adjustment as fitted is soemtimes not enough.

baggywrinkle, I wouldn't use it for the Jupiter/Venus conjunction, Venus is very bright at the moment and could damage your eyes....... :->

Michael

You know what it's like when you get a new toy, you want to use it for everything.....

Double enjoyment last night, absolutely clear evening and it was stunning to see Jupiter and Venus appear in a single field in my 9.25.
