Kasai 4x22 Super View WA binoculars - 17º true field

Hi all,

Normally these small roof prism binoculars cost €25, but Klein has them for sale at €15. Of course I tried them.

They look like this

They are identical to these from Kasai trading company: Google translate link

Here's my first impression.

Nice small binoculars, easy to hold still because the magnification is only 4 times. They feel solid too, weighing 400 g.

The optics are surprisingly good. Really sharp on-axis, with a sharp sweet spot of about 50% of the view. The outer 10% of the  field is a useless mess, but with 68º afov this is not much of a problem (for me). Closest focus is about 2.5m.

The prisms are BaK4. The exit pupil is round without a hint of a square shadow. Collimation is good. Chromatic aberration is very well corrected.

Eye relief is 12mm according to specifications, but it actually feels a little longer. When you fold the rubber eye guards down and place your eyes too close to the eye lens some reflective surfaces become visible outside the field of view. It seems that the barrels are not blackened inside. With correct eye placement contrast seems good though and I've not seen any flaring yet.

The maximum pupil distance is not very wide. I measured it at 72mm. I suppose quite a few people have their eyes set wider than that. Minimum pupil distance is 62mm. The eye lenses are about 2 cm wide.

Focussing is achieved by turning the eye cups. The depth of field is big, so you won't have to refocus very much at all.

The Summer nights are too bright for a decent test, but based on my daytime tests, I can really recommend these small binoculars! Although not perfect, they are very good value. They would be even if they cost €40.

Yes, they have prisms. They have an exit pupil and some 12mm eye relief.

Opera glasses have neither exit pupil nor eye relief. With opera glasses the afov just gets narrower as you move your pupil away form the eye lens.

According to astroforum.nl, this is the design:

I would be very surprised if they were roof prism optics.

Prepare to be surprised, Peter.

Ready?

but Klein has them for sale at €15.

Seems the price has more than doubled in 18 months!

We discussed these at length a while back:

I have a pair I discussed here http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/206567-my-libra-superview-4x22-have-arrived/and http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/206802-first-light-with-libra-superview-4x22/ as Steve noted, and they are now not really used any more, except by the kids occasionally. Daytime use is OKish, night-time not so much, but not a bad deal for the 6 euro or so I paid.
