Space Pastels

A few weeks back I needed some new pastels for my observing sessions and my girlfriend suggested that it might be nice if I tried my hand at doing the countryside and coast: trees, waves, rivers, clouds, that kind of thing. I've never done art, not at school and not later in life but I thought I'd give a go and see if I could teach myself something new. So I got myself a basic set of Schmincke pastels which are soft and perfect for night time and day time stargazing sessions.

Anyway, I thought I'd share with you some of the space fantasy sketches I've been doing. None are original in the sense that none have been conjured purely from the imagination. I've lifted ideas from photos and images from the web and tried to play about with them. What I noticed is that very few, if any astronomy sketchers are trying their hand at this kind of thing and apart from one fellow from Germany, I could find no one using pastels. As such, I've had to experiment a little and I'm not too convinced the result is that good. Space art has gone digital which makes a lot of sense, for pastels don't really seem suited to post-Hubble space art and images.

Regardless, here are a few sketches I've made over the last couple of weeks with the theme of space in mind:

Nice stuff Rob, I love the blue bad hair day with the double star seen through it.

I should have a go again, I was an extremely talented artist when I was at school passing O level at the age of 12 and A level when I was 14 years old, top marks both times. I only stopped it because my late Uncle stuck his nose in making a place for me at Art College when i was 17. I always made the point that if I were going to any College it would be on my own ability and not because my Uncle was Principal, I stopped painting and drawing that day and never did a thing until the other week. I was messing about a month back with my sons paints and my wife was truely gobsmacked at the little scene I did in 5 minutes on a pasta box wich was white card.

Really good. I particularly like the 'Neptune' style one (number 3) and the background stars in the first. What size are the originals?

You are right, of course, there is a lot of digital space art about, but nothing beats the artistic talent of hand crafted work and that will always have desirability. I reckon that you would be able to sell your work.
