Looking through an eyepiece

Recommended Posts

Having spent the last couple of hours looking at the moon with various eyepieces, I noticed that if my eye was too close to the eyepiece everything just blacked out. Optically, is there some sweet spot distance from eye to eyepiece to get the best view?

Another one to look into is 'eye relief'.

The short version is that 'exit pupil' is the diameter of the beam of light out of the eyepiece and 'eye relief' is how far away from the top lens your eye should be to see the whole field clearly.

With all the eyepieces that I have used that had adjustable height eyecups, I've found, as a non-glasses wearer, that I needed the eyecup in the highest position. The lower positions seem to accomodate those that need to wear glasses better.
