300D Bulb Setting, EOS Utilty, and Timed Exposure Sequences

Recommended Posts

My astro-modded 300D has broken Compact Flash pins, so I use Canon EOS Utility to download images to a PC via the mini-USB socket.

However none of the EOS Utility versions that work with the 300D and Windows XP allow timed exposure sequences in Bulb setting, it only works up to the 30 seconds setting.

This failing is well documented, it's not just my finger trouble!

There is a way around this.

Set the shutter to B in EOS Utility, and use Stark Lab's DSLR Shutter to run timed exposure sequences, the two seem happy running together.

If you want to see a review of each exposure you can set EOS Utility to open each image in "Linked Software" such as DPP or ZoomBrowserEX.

Or point "Linked Software" to Windows Picture Viewer (shimgvw.dll) or RAW Viewer.

The 300D shutter isn't controllable via the mini-USB like newer cameras, you will also need an opto-isolated USB-to-serial shutter cable that plugs into the shutter socket (2.5mm stereo).

I think the solution might be to buy a remote timer or intervalometer - same thing different name as best I kno.

These plug into a socket on the camera and take over.

The general operation is you set the exposure, the wait time and the number of shots.

So for 10 60 second shots you would set Exposure = 60,

Wait = 60 (allow the sensor to cool)

Number of exposures = 10.

Amazon

If it does not work then go to Amazon, pick out Electronics and Photo, enter in the search box "remote timer canon 300D"

Not 100% sure how this would oprate with the assorted bits you have however to get around the CF pin problem.

If the canon does a NR exposure then account for this in the wait time (double it and add a bit more).

If you would like to try to fix the CF pins i can recommend you try a needle tip, you need it to be big enough to fit the pin inside the needle tip.

This worked perfectly on a 40D i repaired

Thanks for the replies, but with respect, everything as described is working for me, so why would I buy an Intervalometer ?

EOS Utility and DSLR Shutter are free, the USB shutter cable costs less than a tenner in parts, and I can see the PC screen in the dark!

Thought about mending the CF socket with needles, even found a source of exactly the right size, but getting to the CF board involves completely disassembling  the camera, makes the filter removal look easy.

So didn't bother since everything as described is working for me.

So if you have a 300D and want to automatically take multiple long exposures that download directly to your PC, please read my post.
