EQ8 SW longer counterweight rod

Bonjour,
someone told me that if we put a longer counterweight rod (more than 40cm)
it would be possible to hold less kg on it with the same conterweight action
so you save charge on the EQ8 motor and may be you can add more accessories

did someone try it?
merci

That would be a complete waste of time and money. The only reason to extend the counter weight rod is to put on more weight. The rod extension will constitute a large proportion of weight anyway.

Well, I was actually referring to the numbers I quoted, not he principle. The only difference between the two options should be the flex of the shaft. The one exception to this may be really high end mounts, where the CW shaft is usually in the neighbourhood of 50-80 mm thick and made of good steel. With any other mount I would go for more weight further up rather than the opposite.

Yes, it is a nice stop after fiddling with the observatory. We usually fly in to Nice and drive up to Olly's, then stay a few days on the Riviera, mostly Villefranche and Antibes.
