I should be moving to the new house in a few weeks, i have a piece of decent hardwood to set in concrete for a pier, but i am going to need a simple way to mount the EQ5 to this 4" x3" timber, open to ideas please

Does it have to be removed each time you observe? or can it be permanently attached?

All the best

It might stay on for a few days at a time but yes removable as some one will try to steal it

On my Alt-Az tripod I have the need to attach a heavy scope temporarily but firmly and I've found that threaded studs on the mounting plate and knurled lock "nuts" work very well. They hold it securely but require no tools and the whole thing can be mounted in a few seconds. The trick is to make them wide and heavy so that with a flick their angular momentum winds them right down the thread. Also being a large diameter the torque you can achieve using the knurling is easily enough to hold the scope steady. (pic below) perhaps a permanently fixed plate with three or four studs on the peir then a matching plate on the mount so you can drop it on the studs and fix it securely with the lock nuts?

all the best

Tim
