EQ8 Polar Alignment

Recommended Posts

Regarding the polar alignment procedure without a polar scope (pg 35 of the Synscan v4 manual) it mentions in step 4 to end the centering with the handset with the up and right direction keys.

Why these two keys exactly and does it make any difference if you don't finish centering with these keys?

When doing Ny kind of alignment, it is recommended to use the up and right keys to end the move, so it always meshes the mechanism inside in the same way and reduces backlash as said above. What i do is to turn the rate right down, to say 1 or 2 and then press up and right a few times alternatively and quickly, so things inside mesh, but actually the object doesn't move a great deal from the centre of the field of view. Else do the final movement with those keys only; if you need to use the down and left keys, go further than needed with those, then use the up and right ones again to finish the centring.

Note that if your mount is not perfectly level then you may need to tweak both az and alt controls of the mount at the same time when adjusting its alignment towards the ncp.

I'll take your word for it but I remain highly sceptical of fancy software solutions to a problem which can be solved without software and the dozens of errors which go with software.

Surely with a fixed EQ8 (you are not going pottering off into the field with ne of these?) then a quick drift alignment, a direct and software-free observartion, is going to serve you well? Indeed, do you really want a perfect alignment? Being slightly off has a lot going for it on guided mounts.
