G'Day from Innisfail, Queensland, AUSTRALIA

G'Day fro Ken.

I've just left the military after 26 years and have time on my hands. I travel about 2000KMs to look after a friends horse property and visit my horse, so have lots of clear skies to play with. Also, I live in the bush so have little light pollution to deal with. so I've purchased a Celestron CPC 800, Celestron lens kit and Power Tank 17ah.

Just playing around last night and apart from a beautiful Southern hemisphere full Moon, saw Jupiter and its 4 moons as well as 3 clear lines running horizontally across the planet.

Fantastic!

I'm really looking forward to being a member of this group and learning from you all.

Thank you in anticipation and best wishes fromOz.

Ken

Ken do you ever get away for several days just riding?  A friend  of ours heads off to the Snowy Mountains several times a year to just ride and spend time with school mates.  His wife seems to be happy too! :)

Reason I ask is more about the possibility of observing if you do.  Apart from binoculars - which may be the safest, you might want to start a thread on what would be the best really portable telescope. :)

A guy that I met at Swinburne, years ago, had spent a few years working as a surveyor and he said that at night the guys used the theodolite and levels to view the sky, which with those smaller instruments was impressive.

There's also the target scopes as a possibility.

Welcome!

Hello Ken, and a very warm welcome to the star-crazy gang. I really hope you enjoy your astronomy and you have a great time with your new friends on this wonderful forum.

All the best

Hi Ken, and welcome to SGL.

Recently returned from visiting my Daughter in Melbourne. We spent 8 days in the Daylesford area, where I was able to enjoy

stunning views of the Milky Way with my trusty Bins. I have never wanted access to a good aperture telescope so badly though.
