Help fitting new focuser in Dob

Recommended Posts

Hi all, My name is Brian and I purchased a new focuser for my Orion DSE. The new focuser base is smaller than the previous focuser. The tube hole over the secondary is too big from the previous focuser so the new one has nothing to screw into. What are some ideas for the best way to fill in the hole that would give a strong enough base to screw in the focuser base? Hope I explained my question well enough. Clear skies!

Hi Brian: Off hand I'd say you will be best off by putting a 2" focuser in there. If you want to use 1.25" gear - as most of us do - simply use a 2" to 1.25" adapter in the focuser.

May I ask you why you wish to 'upgrade' to a smaller focuser? Most people do the opposite and go from 1.25" to 2."

Dave

Thank Dave but I think there's a misunderstanding in my description, I do have 2" focuser. The old focuser screw placement for installation was 3 1/8"x3 1/2" apart. I widened the hole from a previous helical focuser to fit this focuser just mentioned. The focuser I just bought has a screw placement of 2 3/4"x 2 3/4". Because I widened the hole before, the newest one (2 3/4x2 3/4) doesn't have anything to screw into to place the focuser unit above the secondary.

Ah! I get it now. Then my advice will need a question adressed: Do you have skills with cutting metal and making new components? In other words - Do you have a machine-shop? If you don't, I suggest you look for a good one around your neck of the woods. Then take the OTA to them and show them what you need done. It would be a good idea to remove the primary and secondary mirrors first - the whole spider. They should be able to cut you a nice plate to mount your new focuser on to. And drill the required holes to screw it to.

I've had to do that sort of thing before, and found a good machine-shop owner who made excellent customized parts for me. And it wasn't horribly expensive either. Please keep us informed on how it's going? Once you have a good solution, some pictures would be great to show people who find this thread 10 years down the road. They may be wondering what to do also.

Clear Skies,

Dave
