New telescope advice needed!!

Recommended Posts

I think it's going to be challenging to find something that has GOTO / tracking and will out perform your current 130mm scope. The GOTO / Tracking requrement will eat most of the £350 budget. If you could do without those features the possibilities get more exciting

Hi there,

That's a fine budget for a visual setup. New, my vote would be for a 200p dob, your budget would also allow for a couple of new ep's. This scope would give you years of service. No goto though..

£279 from FLO  http://www.firstlightoptics.com/beginner-telescopes/skywatcher-skyliner-200p-dobsonian.html

£360 (reduced from £475) will get you a 127 mak on a goto mount, a great planetary scope. From RVO  :- http://www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/celestron-nexstar-127-slt-telescope.html

I have no idea of this telescope, I was looking in the clearance section anyway this link was below it but it piqued my interest as I have just read your post and saw the price and it has goto, a little over budget.

That looks quite good

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Is it possible to do astrophotography on a dob?⭐️

Not really. Snapshots of the Moon perhaps. You need a driven equatorial mount for astrophotography really.

How serious do you imagine your astrophotography desire will be?

What do you see yourself trying to produce and the equipment/software needed to match the image output expectation.

If you have high expectations then the gear will be high as well.

Have a think about that and then look at this post.

Lastly there can with some telescopes be an issue with reaching focus when going to use an imaging device so search to see what others have managed with the intended setup so as to avoid disappointment.

This post includes webcam planet images from a 127 mak mentioned above.

Dob refers to the style of base that a reflector telescope sits on. Dobsonian.

For moon & planets scrap the goto, but drives essential.

Skywatcher 150PL, will outperform a 5" mak. £183 for the OTA, from RVO. Does high power very well and will also give a reasonably good FOV at low mags. Years ago, this was the telescope type that everyone had, because it does everything rather well.

Put this on a 2nd hand EQ5 with drives. Around £150, check Astrobuysell UK.

Now you have a very respectable lunar and planetary set up.

One thing, if space is a consideration, the 5" Mak on the AZ GOTO would be better suited but would show a tad less. But then you get your goto and you can hang a small wide field scope from that mount if you wanted to escape the narrow FOV that the Mak will give you.

Decisions, decisions!

That does sound good, I do like the look and spec of the skywatcher range
