Hello all,

I'm in the Midlands, UK and I've been hoping to get into astronomy for a long time and am finally doing something about it! :)

I was bought some binoculars a couple of Christmases ago - just from the high street, nothing specialized for astronomy. Since then have been checking out some simple sights when I have had time, got myself a tripod, and just recently I'm joining a local astronomy group. I hope to get more into it and get a telescope eventually but for now I'm having a really good time learning about what you can see out there, and making the most of the what I've got!

Hi Paz,

Welcome to SGL, great start with the binos. A couple of books to help you round the sky are 'turn left at orion' and 'sky&telescope pocket star atlas'. If you have not downloaded a planetarium program try stellarium, its great and free to be found here :-- http://www.stellarium.org/ .

Another astro group in the midlands is www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk

Hi Paz and welcome to SGL from East Anglia. I started with binoculars and am still a fan.  Spent the last clear evening scanning south from my backyard yard, the constellation Coma Berenices has lots to offer to a man with 'bins' on a dark night.

Hello Paz and a warm welcome to the star-crazy gang. This is a wonderful forum, full of knowledgable folks and I'm sure you'll have a great time. Like you, I only have binoculars (Cannon 18x50 image stabilised) and a spotting scope (Praktica 20-60x70mm) but enjoy looking at the wonders of the night sky. Hopefully one day, I'll get a proper scope.
