Hi Rach, welcome to the forum and good to see another Altonian on here :).  Hope you are going to be putting the scope to good use tonight, looking very clear out, but a bit windy.  I am just packing the car up to go a few miles out of town :)

Thanks, all. I'm looking forward to it. So far, I've been amazed nightly by Jupiter. I also saw M13 the other night. I haven't gotten as much sleep this week - even when I do go inside, I'm too excited to fall asleep for awhile. I'm looking forward to a cold night in my garden. It gets reasonably dark here (we saw the milky once, when watching the perseids).

Hi Rach and welcome to the forum. Well hubby has done you proud as he has purchased what can be termed the goldilocks scope - not to big to move about and set up whilst big enough to capture plenty of detail on deep sky objects! There will always be extras that you can buy so he might come in handy again with the right persuasion!

One suggestion is to download some free planetarium software called Stellarium which is very popular among many members here and has plenty of 'toys' on it to keep you entertained when the clouds come in. On the book front I would suggest 'Turn Left at Orion' which lists some 100 objects that can be viewed throughout the year. Not the cheapest book out there but it is an excellent introduction in finding some of the brightest objects up there and the book includes both visual and written instructions on how to find these objects too. You can take a look here if you want to see what the typical layout looks like.

Clear skies and hope you enjoy your stay here.

Sleep is something reserved for those cloudy nights  Welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy the new scope...
