Complete Solar Halo

Was on the phone to Mum earlier and a Red Kite flew over the garden at about 20' - amazing sight!

Quickly said my goodbyes and legged it out with the camera but by then the kite had gone somewhere else for lunch. I think he was after a pigeon that was hiding in the eucalyptus tree at the end of the garden.

While out looking for the Kite to return I noticed a solar halo, the dSLR doesn't have a wide enough FOV, neither did the Ipad, the only thing I had that had a wide enough field of view was the S3 phone.

So these shots were taken with that, they've come out ok considering

I think this is my first full halo.

Wow, never seen that effect before, but will keep an eye out for it now. Any idea what causes it?

I believe it's the same process as Sun dogs, so ice crystals in the air. Depending on the shape of the crystals you get different effects.

I'd like to make out that its some kind of Monolith from 2001, but alas it was the washing line with its cover on
