Heads up: PST CaK for sale on ABS-UK

Recommended Posts

Sooooooo tempting.

Shame I'm under instructions not to spend lots at the moment. But I want.

Awww man.

Also the sterling/euro rate right now is not great.

These scopes are pretty old now aren't they?

What if anything is there to look for in the way of degradation?

Isn't CaK something that most folks can't actually see anything in ?

Presumably it's for imaging, primarily.

It does say in the ad that it's more suitable for imaging

From what I gather the younger amongst us can see CaK better than us old farts. Something to do with our eyes adapting to light differently as we get older. I suppose if we needed to see in CaK day in day out the ability would stay with us for longer ??? Either way my guess is the money would probably be best spent elsewhere if you don't intend imaging with the scope.

Could be a lottery, some of the filters may have gone, might be astigmatic. If you mod it then both are fixable. CaK is for imagers only, even if your eyes can see it they can't resolve detail very well. CaK is always interesting and you don't get the "double stacking disease" that you get with hydrogen alpha. The Lunt CaK module works well

Mark Townley has made his own CaK filter that seems to work quite well too.

Cheers

Is there much point in getting one of the Baader CaK filters to use with a standard white light filter?

I must say for the cost of the Baader the price of the PST looks pretty good.

Jarrod I guess it depends on your expectations. For me I would want close to the performance of the CaK PST/Lunt Module and to my eyes the Baader Calcium K-Line images I have seen look interesting but are not quite up there with them. But a personal call I think, for me I'd spend the extra if going for it.

The PST looks a nice price, well worth it if it performs well but I am trying to resist CaK, but would be powerless to resist if it was in Quark format.

That is the thing though, under normal circumstance the extra price difference is quite a bit more than 50 quid as a Cak Module isn't exactly cheap. This, on the face of it is a real good purchase that doesn't come up too often.

Maybe if it's still around in June but I highly doubt it will last another week.

Oh I see :embarrassed:

It does look a good deal, I would have been in there like a shot a little while ago, what has partly put me off is I haven't done as much white light imaging as I would have liked this year, the h-alpha has been eating up most of the little clear skies we have had. So I've stuggled to use two lights never mind three. Then when we finally get a good clear day with decent seeing I will probably fancy doing an animation!

If however I lived somewhere sunny...:grin:

Oooh stop it. :p

We are on track to buy a house by the end of the month so my wife is freaked out enough about money as it is so I have been banned from any purchases until that has gone through and everything has settled down. Otherwise I would jump at this.
