Wave distortion in filming the Moon with telescope.

Recommended Posts

Hi All... There are a number of videos on Youtube which are causing a slight stir. They show wave distortion in recordings of the Moon. They look to me to fall into two categories, one type, perhaps caused by atmospheric disturbance, the other I think trouble with the camera.

Has anyone seen this distortion before , or know what it is? A precise analysis would be appreciated, with time markers for the video. Many thanks in advance.

Hi 'oz93666' and welcome to SGL.

As per Steve... Atmospherical distortion.

You get a similar effect if you listen to an AM short-wave broadcast band and the audio/signal fades 'in & out'.

Thanks for the responses, as I suspected the majority of this is atmospheric, but theres one sequence starting 8:35 which is of a different nature,  a perfect strait 'wave' , I think this has to originate in the digital video camera, has anyone seen this type of distortion before?

Did you use any form of video compression (video codec) when recording the original footage?

Do you do any form of frame rate conversion (how ever small) during any part of the stage from recording to youtube video?

Those straight line waves are surely not due to normal atmospheric distortion. The only thing I can currently think of that could cause an atmospheric distortion like that is maybe the wake of an aircraft or maybe a leading bow wave from an aircraft or such like - a bit like the waves on water from a boat.

Try a day time recording with the same setup of a distant object on the horizon ?

I've not seen this before myself.

I've just read through a number of responses to this subject on Youtube, seems like we have a fair bit of outreach to do yet!

That's true.... I appreciate the civilized response I've received on this forum.

I submitted this question, (same wording) to astronomy forum.net .... the question never appeared, and I received a lifetime ban , "violation-troll".

If us idiots don't have our questions answered, idiots, we'll forever be...... Thanks again.

No-one on SGL has ever been banned for asking questions, quite the reverse, we encourage people to ask whatever they like.

Asking questions is how we increase our knowledge :)
