This just in through my letterbox:-

Unlit Parish Status

In support of the SDNP 'Dark Skies' initiative, the Parish is now formally an unlit Parish. The Parish Council drafted a policy which has been adopted and served on WSCC and HDC. This means that the default position for any new development is no lighting so that we can preserve our star-scape.

YYYIIIPPPPEEEEE!! :grin: :grin:

SDNP = South Downs National Park

WSCC = West Sussex County Council

HDC = Horsham District Council

Unfortunately for me I don't think they could make the steel works turn out of their lights.. it probably would be a legit safety concern!

Part of my heritage, that is :)  My maternal grandfather was a pipe-fitter at Scunthorpe steelworks and my dad also worked there for a while after leaving school.  I have a vague memory from my childhood of some sort of siren sounding when the shifts changed, but it's entirely possible I imagined that.

I honestly didn't realise the steel works was still operational.  I've probably not been back to the town for twenty years or so.

Good news! Does this mean that any existing street lighting will be removed, as well?

There is currently only one and it couldn't be further away from me but newcomers to our sleepy village have been making noises about the dark - grrrrrrrrrrrr

We have just had our lamp posts upgraded to the new led ones, they are much better but unfortunately I still have Drax power station (the UKs largest) about a mile away, glowing away and generating it's own supply of clouds!

Now THAT must be very frustrating. :-(
