Newtonian Rear Cover removal

Recommended Posts

I've read that some people remove the rear cover of their Newts permanently (unless I've misinterpreted this) to speed up access for collimation and cooling. Is the downside to this that the primary is more exposed so more at risk of damage? I've not collimated yet, but it does seem that taking the back off would likely lead to loosing the screws at some point anyway!

Most Newtonians don't have a rear cover plate, but those that do, I'd remove it to allow better mirror ventilation.

You can tape the fixing screws to the plate so they don't get lost, just in case you change your mind.

But before you remove the cover plate, make certain it is just that, we don't want people removing the mirror cell by mistake

Regards, Ed.

I've just been reading about some people drilling holes in the backplate to access the adjusting screws, sounds good to me, I'll also get some knobs when I do it, sounds a bit easier than fiddling with screws, although I then suspect it makes them more susceptible to being nudged about and putting the mirror out. Although this might not be a problem once one becomes proficient in collimation!!

I've also seen cooling fans mounted on the backplate to speed up cool down times. There is no end to the fiddling / modifications you can do to these things, especially when it's cloudy !

I know, I've only had mine five minutes and I'm already thinking of flocking it! I guess I can drill the backplate, flock, add knobs and then force myself to to have a go at collimation!

Try it without the back plate, Collimation is a couple of minutes on a bad day once you get you head round what and why you are doing it......

Your sig says C8-n, if it's anything like the C6-n that came with my avx then the screws holding the backplate are standard M3 screws. I replaced them with thumb screws so I can take the backplate off without resorting to tools.
