Getting started with Ha ?

Recommended Posts

Hi there !

For the record, I have a 90mm Apo scope with a full aperture solar filter and the sun is very beautiful on the occasional view through it.

I am now interested viewing solar detail so my obvious questions are:

1. Can I do this with my current refractor, avoiding the extra purchase of a specialized solar scope ?

2. If yes to above, and you had to pick one filter for the job, which would it be ? I know there are lengths and different detail and contrast in each, question is what is most viable for my kind of telescope.

If no to above, the nevermind, I wouldn't buy a separate scope just for that at this time :)   I do have an 80mm Achro also, if it helps.

3. I am finding the Baader brand easy to order and ship worldwide, so if you can recommend one off their line it would be super !

Thank you for any tip !

Hello. The answer is yes, you could use your APO or Achro for Ha solar viewing. The "bad" news is that this would be very expensive for the necessary filters. The cheapest route would appear to be the addition of a Daystar Quark Ha eyepiece. Other than that you would have to consider a specialised solar telescope, the Lunt LS50 or Coronado PST are in a similar price bracket. Baader seem to supply only energy rejection filters for just part of the essential components for some Ha options.

The Badder SC filter will enhance the white light detail - a marginal improvement.

A Baader Herschel wedge will give excellent white light views, but to see any filaments and proms you need to go down the Ha dedicated telescope route.

Can't add anything to what has been said but as the well worn phrase says, Rome wasn't built in a day  Astro gear is often very expensive and rather than getting in debt for it, I think it is better to save slowly and work towards the goal. It's not all bad, for saving up is really quite exciting and each season you see yourself getting a little closer to your objective and when you get there the feeling is phenomenal. You can say to yourself, "I did it!"
