Tentative hello!

Hello everyone!  I've just joined the site as I know next to nothing about stargazing though I'd love to get out there with like minded people and learn as much as I can.  I was hoping perhaps there would be groups locally (I'm in Glasgow) where I could find out more about what's out there!  You all seem like a friendly and informative bunch, so I'm looking forward to posting more and learning from you all. :)

Hi EndlessDelirium,

Warm welcome to SGL. The thing is if we have made a silly mistake, we hope to help others before they copy us!! So ask away in the relevant forums.

The first step is to find your local astro group so that you can see what others have and what may suit you best. You would be surprised what you can see with a half decent pair of binos. A couple of books to get you started 'turn left at orion' and 'sky&telescope pocket star atlas'  will get you started and help you 'learn' the sky.

When you have 10 mins download a planetarium program. lots out there but try stellarium, its great and free, to be found here :--- http://www.stellarium.org/

Hello and a warm welcome to the SGL from a fellow Glaswegian, though I now live in Lenzie. There is a club, The Astronomical Society of Glasgow which holds monthly meetings in Strathclyde University and various observing sessions in the Glasgow area. Google it and you will find the programme.

Hi and welcome to SGL - This is a great forum, friendly and people are willing to impart their vast knowledge as well. I'm sure that a google search would find you a local club that you could go along to. Meanwhile download Stellarium on your PC - A great planetarium programme that will help you navigate your way around the sky.

Look forward to seeing you around :)

Thanks for all the tips and welcome messages - I'll certainly check those books out and download those programs.  I noticed there was that society in Glasgow, I was a bit wary as I wasn't sure how welcoming they'd be to a complete novice (I don't have any equipment yet, though I'll have a look around on here and get some ideas as to what would be a good start) but I'm more encouraged from the messages on here :)

I guess everyone was a beginner once!

Hi... I'm not sure if you'll get to see this (given that I'm uncertain how forums work!) but I was wondering if you'd been to any of the meetings?

EndlessDelirium the only silly questions are those not asked - FWIW. :)

I think too that you'll be pleasantly surprised at the various turns in conversation that can occur - all from

asking a 'deceptively simple' question.

"You are Welcome...!"*
