M100 (Plus ID'ing fainter objects?)

Don't hold the front page? Mostly experiments in scaling dark

frames and dealing with gradients! But M100 and friends... :)

It seems quite hard (for me! lol) to find data on fainter objects.

There seem to be a lot of catalogues...  mostly of images?  :o

So, I was wondering:

Can I find online data on e.g. PGC40214 - magnitude, SB etc.

(Such things seem something of a hot topic of late here!)

Hey, who let that WHITE STRIPE in... :D

Hi Chris,

Really like these deep shots, find it interesting how deep  small scopes can image. I find it hard to get good info on small faint objects where you don't know what it is you are seeing.

SkySafari Pro might be worth a shout, as it appears to claim galaxies down to mag 18 - though it's £30 to find out!

Nice pics BTW- using the Watec? I do like the negative in particular as it does seem easier to see detail on the deep stuff.

Yes, it's a Watec image. Though (naturally) the result of stacked frames!

After much procrastination, I am finally trying to "get my act together" re.

such things - A Website (Wordpress blog) and a Flikr is coming soon...

Mostly, I have to say, to aid a limited memory of what I DID re. exposures

and post processing. But I do intend to "document" current methods.  ;)

Hmmm... Most graphics programs will furnish you with a Negative image?

I'm too "mean" to rent / buy Photoshop, so I use the GIMP program. :p

Under the "Colors" menu , there is an "Invert" option...

Thanks for that Paul. :)

I do actually have a (somewhat abbreviated) version of Sky Safari on my Phone...

I'll have to check the possibilities of various databases for the various programs!

I suppose 16th magnitude is nothing special, but I claim the surface brightness is

certainly less than that. Not good seeing and I clobbered it in the processing? :D

Aside: Now that I've found something to do gradient subtraction (I figured out how

to use the IRIS software) a whole new world beckons. Hope springs eternal... :p
