My secondo hand c 9.25

Recommended Posts

I have just purchased a second hand celeston c 9.25 xlt.

Am I right in thinking that the two extra knobs are a mod to block the main mirror after focus?

I bought it for 800 euros .It is Also flocked and has a 0.6 reducer and gso crayford focuser.

They must be mirror locks, my 9.25 doesn't have them.

Considering them and all the other bits sounds like you got a bargin. well done.

Is it fastar compatible? do you have the option to buy a hyperstar later? if you can then i don't think you could have done any better

enjoy

I have just tried to attach the scope to my EQ6 which had an Altair Astro Losmandy clamp.

THe Celeston Losmandy slides through my Altair Astro losmandy plate even when fully tightened.

Are their different gauges of Losmandy?

Thanks.

I have just put a couple of strips of black American tabe in the groove of the moving part of my Losmandy clamp and a strip on the Celeston bar, All seems well for now.

There shouldn't be but there are. Be sure to use end stop bolts on the dovetail to stop it sliding through even when you have a good fit.

Re the mirror locks, be sure not to use the focus adjuster when they're locked, and don't over tighten them.

Good choice for planeary viewing for sure.

Dewsheild and heater...? They are very quick to dew up.

An Orion dew shield came with the scope.

I will invest in a heated strip to go round the OTA- any suggestions?

Thanks for the advice on not over tightening the mirror lock bolts and not to fiddle with the focuser when locked down.

THe scope is balanced and on the mount. Hopefully I will get to try it this evening.

I focused on a mountain top about 20 miles away with the Crayford focuser draw tube mid-way and locked the main mirror down.

Is this the correct procedure?

Without my Kendrick Dew Band my 9.25 would gladly remove all the surplus moisture in the air above the Yorkshire Dales. They are Canadian made but available from good retailers (in the UK I know). I picked Kendrick because an additional controller is not absolutely necessary.

The previous owner of the C 9.25 removed the corrector plate to flock the scope but did not mark the plate before removing it.

Is their a way to star test the plate at different positions in order to ascertain the best orientation?

As you mention, a star test will reveal the current quality of image. Rotating the corrector plate gradually is a fiddly business, usually requiring re-collimation and an optical bench or at least an artificial star would be a huge benefit. I used to optimise SCT optics using an optical bench and small adjustments to the corrector can have significantly good/bad effects.

I have just spoken to a technician at the Bergamo Observatory who told me to bring the scope down to him and in half an hour he would align it all up on an optical bench.

He services Celeston SCts.
