Jupiter from a newbie

Evening all.

I was bought a scope just over a year ago by my wife as I have always wanted a telescope since i was a kid. But due to family and work I've never had the time to push it from a wishing hobby to an active hobby, until recently.

I got myself set up, from reading this forum for a few weeks, picking up tips along the way. Feeling I had adequate knowledge of what to do on what was really my first proper time observing, I decided it was time to take my scope out on the next available night.

So last night, the sky was clear but there was a haze in he sky and a bit of a low misty fog too, but nethertheless I pursued and boy was I glad!!!

To be able to see such detail of another planet was just incredible! I was absolutely amazed by what I saw and am truely gutted that tonight is so overcast as all day id been hoping to get back out there and spend some free time gazing into the Sky.

It's experiences like this that remind you just how small we are.

Neil

Ps sorry for giving you my life story haha

Hi Neil, nice 1 mate the first views are always the best, was looking forward to seeing a few tonight at a get together but the weather here is horrible so I think another night lost to the clouds but heh everything up there is going to be around for a few million more years or so, but was out at the eclipse this morning so impressed that I may get a filter and do a little solar observing I think so looking forward to your second night out and me for my first steps into a bit of solar observing. Nice 1 mate keep us informed of how things are going.

Paul.

Nice to hear you are enjoying your scope, I still get that first time feeling every time I

get to observe, Jupiter is a great target, and is different every time you view it, the

longer you observe it the better it gets, and also the better the seeing the better the

view, the ultimate view is when the Great Red Spot is in view, here is a link which gives

you the times it will be in view http://www.jodrellbank.manchester.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/

the site gives you other targets to view and will update to next month when it's due.

Keep enjoying observing, and good luck with the GRS.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely got the bug, checking the weather on my phone almost every hour. Been really frustrating recently as been lovely clear skies, but been ever so windy!

Thanks for the link ronl, would love to see the GRS, being able to see the bands was amazing but to see te GRS too would be breath taking. It's 9am, I'm at work, and I'm already wishing the day away! Excited just thinking about it.
