What is the best use of an iPhone on short fracs ?

I was wondering, what is the best way to produce any simple dso images (for the purpose of the discussion we'll say M42) on apo refractors on an unmotorized mount.

I really want to send my mother a card with what I've been up to so I figured this could be pretty original.

I downloaded this exposure app from the app store, and I can find a "clip" to mount it on the eyepiece.. Question is how do I best use theee conditions to take a nice shot of M42 ? What kind of exposures ?

Regarding the editing, I do have some stacking software, and Photoshop. Question is what to do with the Iphone to get solid material back to the laptop :) i have no idea in this ! But am willing to start guided experimenting :)

Thanks for any input at all...

Just finished reading this :

https://canadianastronomy.wordpress.com/2013/03/04/smartphone-astrophotography-how-to-photograph-the-moon-planets-with-your-phone/

Pretty cool !

He mentions the use of 80A and moon filters.

What if I want an M42 shot ? Do I need a UHc/OIII type filter for a picture like his ? I was going to get them anyway for visual....

With your mount not being motorised the exposure length is going to be short, too long and you will get star trails.

Just have to try and see if your iphone is sensitive enough to pick up the light and how many seconds exposure you can get away with.

Take many and use deep space stacker to stack them.

Found this iphone user.

Could send your photos by email to your laptop, on laptop open email maybe you use a web browser to access your email.
