tonylumley
had a calamity with my laptop and lost a load of internet stuff, an the one thing I am real annoyed about is the program I had which showed the stars etc for tonight cannot remember what it was called, any suggestions gratefully accepted. I know it was a free down load,( cos I am a bit of a skin flint) and think it might have been stella something, thanks in advance Lum,
MattJenko
Stellarium or Cartes du Ciel are the likely candidates
michael.h.f.wilkinson
Yep, those are the usual suspects, with Steallarium most often used

goose35
On the same subject of star maps. I have SkyX that came with my celestron, is this comparable to the oft mentioned stellarium ?
MattJenko
it is indeed. Slightly different options and functionality, but basically a planetarium program which can do additional functions, such as telescope pointing/slewing etc. TheSkyX comes in various commercial flavours and becomes more and more feature filled the more professional the version. It is a very nice piece of software from the time I had it on my Mac, although quite intensive on my elderly MacBookPro. Same can be said of Stellarium as well though. Captain Harlock
Alternatively, if you prefer a smaller setup, there are good phone applications which provide a good alternative.I like to use SkEye on Android, or SkyView on the iPad.Both have a night mode, and are very helpful to help find stars. Sirius Starwatcher
Hello Tony once you've got your laptop sorted any mileage in backing up your Web pages to a memory stick just as a precaution ?
tonylumley
Like the way you are thinking Sirius, but its like telling me to shut the stable door, you have to appreciate that I am " a know it all who doesn't do sensible," the wife's words not mine. lol. but having dropped the preverbal once, a hard drive back up has now been undertaken, and she who must be obeyed has gained an enormous amount of mileage out of this episode, and doesn't look like relenting just yet. A-N-Y
just to let you know version 13 stellerium wont work on some lap tops you may need version 11 cheers stephenYou could instal stellarium 13 MESA version (as most people download the standard version), this would solve the problem where most of the old PCs' problem is that they don't support OpenGL 2.1. So, as long as you have more than 256 MB of Ram and a graphic card that support 3D, you would be able to run it. However, it my lag when running the application if you have a low performing PC. Dave In Vermont
And Cartes du Ciel (Sky-Charts) is another highly acclaimed star-charting software progra. Also free to download and use. CdC, many say, is better for using to remotely aim a telescope that is capable of computer-interface:http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/startNot to worry from it's name being in French, the link is for the English version.Clear Skies,Dave
damnut
@quimby,Version 12.3 works perfectly well. There is an issue with the opengl version on some, but this can be overcome using the mesa version as above.
