Atik 414ex mono M101

I have quickly come to the realisation that mono imaging with filters is not a single night's affair. It is more a never ending process of aiming at the sky and wondering if you will ever have enough data to make an image.

Here is a Lum only shot of M101, taken in a windy field in Essex. 9x10min subs.

Let me know what you think - thanks.

Nicely done I've not pushed much past 3min yet it looks like the longer subs are worth it. What is your light pollution like?

i too just bought a 414 and had a go at a luminance shot of a galaxy around the same area as m101 on a moon lit night, i did 5 minute exposures and the histogram was way over on the right hand side, looking at your image i think we are going to enjoy using these cameras, i`ve also done a few Ha on the rosette neb and a comparison with the 314 and 414, which was posted here, both processed exactly the same, 414 images where taken on a moon lit night although shouldn`t make too much difference in Ha.

It's looking pretty good Matt.  I am also toying with the idea of getting a 'proper' Astro camera (I know you've only just got yours).

Is that an aircraft trail bottom left?

My light pollution levels are quite low. This was actually taken at the North Essex Astro Society observatory rather than my home, but I live in a 'take your torch to the pub' village anyway, so similar. I have decided quite quickly to get myself some NB filters. They are on their way :)

Sara - you are right, the lumpiness is indeed an artefact of noise reduction. I was concentrating so much on my little galaxy I had blinkered myself to the rest. There is an awful lot more to think about when moving to mono, much more than I anticipated.

Morning gnomus - I am not sure if there is an aircraft trail there. Where the image was taken is subject to some significant Stanstead traffic, but I would have thought that the stacking would have removed those. It may be an artefact of my over enthusiastic ACDNR processing for those who know what that is which I am sure you do.

Very nice image Matt - imaging isn't an 'instant gratification' pursuit, that's for sure.
