focal reducer a worthy buy?

Recommended Posts

If you are going to by a f6.3 focal reducer I would recommend that you spend a bit more and get the celestron version I bought one from scopes n skies (Antares brand I think) it was about £30 cheaper but it does suffer from kidney bean shaped stars from about 1/3 of the distance from the edge on a canon 1000d sensor. It also appears to give a larger field of view than that shown in stellarium

Apparently the Alan Gee 0.7 focal reducer is quite good I've never used one but modern astronomy sell them. Have a chat with them. The design is quite different the reducer fits inside the rear cell so if you have a fork mount the camera should clear the base. When I use my focal reducer I can't slew to anything above 58 degrees
