equipment so far.

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the right place but it is about equipment.

So last night I was in bed thinking about the short time I've been in this hobbies and was so listing the things I have so far. No prices as it isn't a blag post!

Tasco 3" table top telescope

Skywatcher 130 explorer

2 webcams

Fujifilm s1800

Point and shoot telescope mount/holder

4 pack colour filters

2 skyglow and moon filters

Simple RA motor drive

7mm - 25mm zoom eyepiece

Camping mat for home made light shield

3 tarpaulins for wind breakers/ and to keep prying eye out.

5 in 1 power pack

1 par focal ring

And I think that's all of it so far...

I've been in the hobby about 2 or 3 months and I think that's a lot of stuff to accumulate in such a short time.

Would just like to know what other people ended up with after a short time in the hobby?

I do use all of the stuff listed so it isn't just impulse buys.

Anyway would love to hear how the astronomy bug got other people!

It doesnt take long to aquire a shed load of equipment.

I started with the Celestron 127 EQ and a pile of good books.

After the first nights use, I decided that an EQ was not essential or required and that I could better the ability of the basic 5" reflector.

The Skyliner arrived shortly afterwards, and my kit list is within my signature.

Im still building the Plossl set, and will probably invest in other EPs at a later date for comparison reasons, but for now, this system is about as good as it will get for my present needs.

Ha, ha, enjoyed reading this. I started with a 150P on an EQ3-2. Had it about a year before buying other stuff, other than collimation tools. I used to go to astro club meetings where they would occasionally hold bring and buy sales. I couldn't get my head around the fact that people had all this stuff and that they were selling it.

Best advice: Do not add it up or count it.

May appear bad but I suspect you are not close to others by a LONG way.

I tend to get eyepieces by sets not an individual item, may start out as 1 but if reasonable the remainder soon follow.

Bought 2 BST's within 5 weeks I had all 6.

Just one camping mat?

You need more then 1 colour dew shield.

If you had cut it wrong you would have needed another, should have got 2 at once for safety.

Also I can only count 2 scopes.

For my first decade in the hobby I had:

- a 60mm refractor on an alt-az mount

- 3 eyepieces (1 was home made)

- 8x30 binoculars borrowed from mum and dad

- a couple of basic astro books

- a monthly copy of "Astronomy" magazine

My kit buying increased substantially when I joined a couple of internet astro forums around 10 years ago - I've owned 30+ scopes since then and I've lost count of the number of eyepieces I've been through :rolleyes2:

I don't do imaging either !

Keep it spread out, ideally in various buildings, that way it doesn't look so much. Says he peering over the desk at 2 EQ5 mounts,1 EQ3-2, 1 EQ1, 1 mounted 20x80 bins and a photo tripod.

Currently my Astro' stuff is where I want it to be so no planned purchases, but I have come to the conclusion that another DSLR body would be useful.

It really is a pain having to change lenses from long to wide. ;)

It been nice reading the replies and what stuff you all started out with! I have always had the idea of owning a telescope from when I was a kid then saw one cheap on eBay at random and thought why not.

I happy with the stuff I have at the moment and don't have plans to rack up loads of stuff but its always nice to have things in the post aha

I need to resist the temptation of getting a bigger scope.

I guess its the excitement of something new.

But I do really enjoy looking up. The first time I saw Jupiter I was almost jumping up and down in the garden aha

..........a bigger scope does have major benefits, but don't exceed those benefits by going so big that you can't handle the shear weight and size? I ordered a replacement scope straight after I used my first scope, which was bought on impulse, and what appeared to be a good price( second hand, and little knowledge till I joined the SGL ) however the scope wasn't up to much, but was wowed by the quality of the extra books in the deal, that has accounted for half my astro book collection? but  the difference in telescope quality and image is  truly amazing.

I would probably go to an 8" and that would be fine for me... I only have one book at the moment. Its an atlas of the planets I believe.

It was a free gift with the second hand scope I got off eBay.

My first scope was tiny, but it came with a nice poster of the moon so that's always a bonus aha got to make the best of what you get.

Plus the shed only has a small corner left as the little boys cars take up most of the room.
