Hi there,

Im Joe, 25,  and I am originally from Irvine, Ayrshire but now live in Glasgow. As the Grandson of a very experienced amateur astronomer it is now time for myself to become part of the astronomy family. Time and work have often hindered my excitement and eagerness to get involved but things have changed and I am now the owner of two very nice but beginner level telescopes!

It's great to be on a forum with loads of like minded enthusiasts, and hope to be in touch with many of you in future endeavors and all things astronomical!

I have attached a very basic photo of Jupiter and the Galiliean moons I took the other night on an iPhone. Yes, an iPhone lol!

Take care :D

Hi Joe and welcome to the forum. You might like to think of downloading some free planetary software called Stellarium which can help you learn the night sky and will also help you find objects of interest. It can be configured to match your exact viewing location and has a nice advance date/time feature which will help you know when objects are going to come into view above the horizon. You may already have a planetarium application on your iPhone but sometimes it;s quite nice to have something on a bigger screen and Stellarium might be the way to go.

Clear skies and hope you enjoy your stay here.

Hi James,

Yea I already have Stellarium on my Laptop. I prefer Starry Night Pro however, but Stellarium free version is brilliant. I think i'm already quite up to scratch however I am always willing to learn more everyday! The star watch application on my phone is brilliant too, but as you say its much better having it on a bigger screen. My next step is aquiring a good planetary camera/webcam now to get better photos . Thanks for your reply James, and I hope to hear from you in the future on here!

Hi to a fellow Glaswegian!

I'm from England really but happen to live here :) It's not the best place for AP - clear nights are rare and precious. Hope you get to learn lots from all the info and help here!

Louise

Hi Louise,

Where in Glasgow are you based?

Hi

I'm not far from Kelvinbridge subway and in the Maryhill/Firhill area. Close to the city centre so bad lp :( I live in a flat also which doesn't help!

Where are you?

Louise

Hi,

Im over in Clarkston in the southside. The light pollution up here is just as frustrating as the cloud. Coming from a rural part of Scotland I do start to pray for clear spells up here :(

Hi

That's fairly out in the sticks! You must have dark skies looking south, at least?

Dark enough but could be way better. The south is your best bet but East Kilbride light pollution is bad. In my grandfathers observatory down in Irvine he complains of the light pollution from Kilmarnock. I wish I had his problem lol!

Come to the city! On a good night I can just about make out Orion... Quite frankly, AP from here is a big challenge!
