Hi all

I've been thinking about getting one of these lenses plus an adapter to use with my Canon 1100d. I have been looking around on Ebay and have seen some for around £98. Is that a reasonable price?

Thanks

Louise

I bought one on ebay a couple of months ago for about £35 with postage.

You just need to keep watching and be patient. I'd say £98 is way too much.

I sold the older 'super takumar' 200mm I had on ebay recently for a mere £21 plus postage

Both nice lenses actually, so you won't lose much if you get a'super' rather than 'smc'.

I like the older primes. Reviews say sharp but heavy. Price seems high. They run under $100 on ebay like this one, not pretty but ok optically, free shipping.

Thanks! Ok - ordered that one :) It seems ok - fingers crossed...

Kropster: pity you sold that one and so cheap! I tend to avoid stuff which seems too cheap...Wonder why you sold it anyway? Surely it was a lens worth keeping?

I sold it 'cos I had just bought the SMC version for less than I paid for the Super Takumar.

As I say... you just need to wait. Auctions that end on weekday mornings often go cheaper.

But, as long as you are happy with the lens you get, it still isn't a lot to pay for such a nice lens.

Hi

Did you find the smc version a lot better (for astro)?

I'd looked before and they come up for auction but I don't trust auctions! For the sake of maybe £20-£30 I can't really be bothered to mess about. £55 for a lens shipped from Japan doesn't seem bad :)

There was nothing in it really. There may have been a tiny colour difference, but nothing significant.

They are both 'coated' lenses, it's just that the SMC coatings are a bit more high-tech.

The difference may well show up when photographing normal bright daylight stuff, when you flood the lens with light, rather than stars.

You are probably right about the price...... very good for shipping so far.

I just get a thrill from nabbing a bargain!

Not to worry you but I was never 100% that my pentax 6x7 - Canon adaptor was reaching infinity, A friend removed

the front ring and skimmed a few mm off the adaptor so I could focus through infinity and be sure I hit the focus. I ended up

buying Mamiya 645 lenses as the were cheaper and faster than the Pentax. If your not sure about your adaptor once you receive it let me know and I can send you mine to have a play.

Hi

Well I got the lens today but it might be a while before the adapter appears. At first glance the lens looked ok but on further inspection... The middle scale ring spins around - not sure if it's supposed to? Probably doesn't matter. There is an Auto-Manual switch. It's covering 'Manual', showing Auto. I can't move it though which doesn't seem right. The aperture adjuster clicks around but doesn't change the aperture - no sign of an iris diaphragm opening closing. That seems like bad news? Any suggestions/advice/guidance?

Thanks

Louise

Hi Louise

The Iris will  not adjust with the ring setting if the lens is set to auto, the small switch can be quite stiff on some of the older lenses so it might need a little gentle persuasion to get it moving but all is not lost if it is realy stuck fast (use of diy aperature mask on the front of the lens).

The condition of the iris blades can be checked even when its set in auto mode by pushing in the pin on the camera end flange.

Look forward to seeing some images with the new addition.

Alan

P.S regarding cost in  your original post I paid well over £100 for my 50mm Takumar lens but it was in mint condition.

Hi Alan

I managed to get the diaphragm to suddenly come to life and with pushing in the pin :) I can't budge the auto-manual switch though.  Will the adapter hold the pin in? If so, then that should be ok. If not, maybe I can rig it to hold the pin in. I've googled and found some sites that give some info about disassembly and repair - but taking it apart would be a last resort!

Thanks

Louise

The adapter will hold the pin down the lens will operate but will remain wide open I dont know your lens in detail but any dismantling of the rear assembly is usually very straightforward.

Bit late to this thread but will mention there are maybe three different 200 SMC Takumers with different max apertures which can account for price differences, also somewhere on the net are instructions for adjusting the back focus.

Mine's an oldish version, I think - not marked 'smc' but has 'super-multi-coated' on it. The coating has a yellowish tinge. Not sure if it might be a radioactive one

Wrap the end with inside out tin foil and sit the glass in sun from the front and hopefully after a good lot of hours it will clear a bit. Somehwere there is a better post I read explaining what to do. I don;t sit the lens next to my head or bed!

Mine (50mm) is yellow but it doesn't impact the images it is taking.

related read here I found.

Super multi coated are before before SMC lenses I think and after the Super Takumars, which had a single coating.

There is very little difference between Super Multi Coating and SMC lenses.

The Auto - Manual switch can be moved...there is a tiny pin on the face of the back end (easy to overlook it...I did!), which is held in when the lens is on the body. Push it in and the auto-manual switch should be moveable. I thought mine was jammed at first till I found the pin.

I think only the 50mm f1.4 / f1.2 had the radioactive lens that goes yellow and can be treated with ultraviolet.

The colour you see is probably the multicoating.
