Narrowband

M81-M82 and IFN HaRGB with DSLR

Recommended Posts

This is my first try at combining RGB and Ha data.

61x300s @ ISO1600 RGB

18x600 @ ISO3200 with Baader Planetarium Ha 7nm

Gear: Skywatcher EQ8, Canon 6Da, GSO 8" f/5 newtonian.

There wasn't as much details in the Ha data for M82 that i had hoped, but i guess the half resolution due to the bayer matrix is the reason for this.

RGB versions posted here

Getting 3 good hours of Ha data took me a full night, was it worth it?

Yeah the 6D is awesome :)

Blacks might look too low for you, but it's really not clipped (looks great on my screen) I'm struggling with calibration of my new monitor since there is almost no settings on it (it's a gaming monitor)

I will reprocess this when i can get the gamma settings corrected.

Hi there, focus looks good and there are some great details in M81.

But i'm using a calibrated monitor and i also think it the background looks very dark, to the point where no IFN is visible at all on my screen. Hope you dont mind but i opened the M81 crop up in PI and you are right, it is not clipped. I gave it a quick stretch and there is plenty of IFN to be seen hanging around! :)

Background brightness really is a matter of taste but one thing i have learned over the years is it is better to have it brighter rather than darker as the details (in this case the IFN) hide in the noise and needs careful stretching to be shown. If a image is too dark its kind of hiding beneath the surface.

lovely, just as one would expect a DSO  image to be like. Very nice and delicate  details too and you have captured quite a bit of the IFN just to put icing on the cake. Great collimation BTW,  I only wish if my scope  was as well collimated as yours.

First version is great, loads of colour :)

But in your quest for IFN (2nd version), the backround levels around the bodes are now slightly darkened. IFN is tough, even with loads of exposure. Try using a layer mask to lift the background without upsetting the bodes.

An inspiring image for a DSLR. I've been wondering whether to try narrow band with my 100d, despite DSLR NB often being described as being not worth the effort. I think this picture has shown what can be achieved and probably motivated me to go further with DSLR imaging rather than my inevitable plunge into CCD imaging. Well done.
