Which photographic filters to use with my setup

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. This is my first post to the forum, so hopefully I am doing this right! I bought the Orion 8'' F/4 astrograph back in November.

Since then I acquired the 80mm autoguiding refractor package, and a celestron AVX mount. However I live in a fairly light polluted area,

and I would like to hear people's recommendations on what filters to use, and for what objects. I've already tried imaging the Orion Nebula,

which is an easy target to test out the equipment. Autoguiding seems to be good, and the camera sensor (Canon EOS 700D) catches

a lot of light in just a 20-30 second exposure at 800-1600 ISO. However there is a lot of glare because of street lamps, and of course the moon.

So my question is which filters you would recommend for someone who wants to mainly image galaxies, but also nebulae? Should it be

EOS-type clip filters, or should it be 2'' filters that go onto the focuser? Thanks to whoever answers beforehand.

Setup:

  • Orion 8'' Newtonian F/3.9 Astrograph
  • Celeston Advanced VX mount
  • Orion 80mm autoguider refractor
  • Canon EOS 700D / Rebel T5i
