Nikon D5100 Dark Frame Comparison (Nikonhacker firmware)

Hello,

i received my used D5100 yesterday. After removing the IR filter assembly i made a comparison between dark frames of the original firmware and the patched (Nikonhacker) firmware which enables true dark current and disables the star eater algorythm.

WIth the Nikonhacker patch it is now possible to get true raw output from the sensor which should make calibration much more accurate and should also improve the deep space noise which tended to be a bit "blotchy" on the unpatched camera.

I've been using this firmware for several months now. It really makes a difference. I haven't changed the filter yet. I have a Baader filter standing by, however. Thanks so much for this report. --Jack

This was published by the Nikonhacker group just prior to beta release of the "True Dark Current" patch

Are you using the patched firmware or the latest tool that injects the code into the ROM memory?

The true dark current has been removed from the firmware patcher for the D5100.

I think not all firmware versions can be patched for true dark current. But at least for the D5100 firmware 1.01 is still patchable for true dark current and star eater. I just tried it:

Yes, I'm using the patch. No problems I've identified.

I'm using patched 1.01 with TDC/disable star-eater/uncompressed NEF and no problems so far. I can't wait for some clear weather to capture some images.

HI all,

Alert:   Newbie here....

I have the D5100 and have been reading about his patch that enables true dark.   I understand that the blacks are not clipped anymore BUT what bout that purple color in the frames?  Is this something that is easy to correct in post?

 

And also is installing the patch:

1- a difficult process?

2- reversible if I want to sell the camera in the future?
