60hrs Cave Nebula - Hmmmmmmmm

I seem to have been working on this for ages (three months between the clouds).

I posted 15hrs of Ha at the end of November - http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/230284-caldwell-9-the-cave-nebula-15hrs-ha/ - and have since added another 15hrs of Ha, 9 hrs of Oiii and Sii (all 45 min subs) plus about 4 hours each of  RGB (15min subs)..about 60hrs in total ...and this is what I've ended up with..

I can't say that I'm particularly happy with it - I've tried all combinations of palettes using Pixinsight and this is Ha blended with Red 60/40 and almost non existent Oiii and Sii blended with G and B. It's the only combination that gave anything like a pleasing colour combination. Any hint of Ha as Luminence gave me a hideous salmon coloured mess.

To my eyes, these colours look OK but the whole thing looks milky with bloated stars (despite reducing them several times at various stages with MT in Pixinsight) and there are orange / yellow halos around some of the stars. I also think there looks to be a greenish gradient in the top right - but this doesn't show in any of the stretched channels. Maybe it's just the contrast between the red and blue in the other corners that's  making it look green? (he says - clutching at straws)

This is quite a dark object, but I think I have enough data - does anyone have any good ideas how to process it any better please?

what a smashing photo, I hope you dont mind i have had a little play

in photo shop elements

I hope i have improved it a bit, Im no expert,

I increased the contrast and  used hasta la vista green, to get rid of the slight green hue,

It a plug in for it.

Nicley done Steve

I really like it, looks really good mate, natural.

I think that there is a lot of wispy white nebulosity which is giving the hazy look to it.

My only recommendation and not sure if you have used it in your workflow yet would be to try a bit of / more deconvolution.

Keep up the excellent work. Some thing for me to strive towards.

Thanks very much for all your kind comments...and thanks Paul for having a play with it. You've done a better job on it than I had!

I've also posted this on another forum and I've had quite a lot of other feedback that indicates that the data is pretty sound, but my processing leaves something to be desired - so my mission in the coming days is a complete re-process from scratch - twice - once in PS and once in PI.

Watch this space....and thanks again

Looks like a nice image Steve. I think the noise reduction may be a tad strong though making the image appear a bit soft, which i understand can be a real pain to decide upon. I also think some more contrast between the dark nebula would look good too. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming versions!

Well. I like it! 60hrs is a mental exposure time!

I'd agree that the NR looks a bit heavy. And I see what you mean about the green margin...it might just be the contrast. You could always hit it with Hasta La Vista Green and see how it turns out?
