Horsehead Nebula Star reflection

Recommended Posts

horsehead

This was 19 * 4 minute exposures ISO 800 using a Modified Canon 450D with a Skywatcher Coma Corrector and a CLS EOS clip filter on my 250mm Skywatcher Quattro Reflector
Apart from it being slightly out of focus does anybody have suggestions on how to avoid the nasty star reflection at the base of the horse.
other then these two issues it had the makings of a nice image

It does indeed have the makings of a good capture - I'm not sure that the focus is too shabby either as there is some fine detail in NGC 2023.

That reflection is going to be an issue though. You can only get to the root of the issue by a process of elimination and I'd start with the  EOS Clip Filter and see if that is the cause - I suspect some interaction between the filter and coma corrector.

Some solutions would be to whether :

- center Aniltak in the image so that its reflexion will be eliminated, but the horsehead will be on one corner of the image

- rotate the 450D so that the reflexion is away below the horsehead and remove it with Photoshop

- maybe test shorter exposures without the CLS CCD filter

Yes I think there may well be some interaction between the CLS CCD filter and the Coma Corrector, I we ever get some clear sky I will give it another go. Although I have heard that the SkyWatcher Coma corrector has issues when there is a bright star

Ok so it would appear that the issue is with the Skywatcher CC, I have purchased the Baader Planetarium MPCC Mark III Newton Coma Corrector 50.8 mm  initial tests have shown none of the reflections I have been  getting with the Skywatcher CC
