January 2, 2015: Lovejoy spotted!

Recommended Posts

Just spotted Lovejoy (C2014 Q2) with my Helios Apollo 15x70 HD. Very easy somewhat elongated blotch just north-east of the little asterism formed by 58, 59, and 60 Eridani. Too low to spot from the garden, but later it should rise above the trees south of my garden. Imaging is probably out of the question, what with clouds scudding past and a bright moon. Nice first binocular session of the year. Comet number 13 bagged (including 2 named Lovejoy)

I have found this data very reliable (although I must admit I do not have the capacity to confirm the precision of the data), as this corresponds with other websites well.

Michael,

This is fairly bright. I went out with the 10.5x70's just to see if it was still there and I accually saw it through a long thin cloud hat was covering only that part of the sky. It was of course much more obvious when the cloud moved even with the almost full Moon. I can't wait until next week and the Moon is out of the way to if I can see it naked eye, which I believe I will be able to. It is meant to be a maximum on my birthday, 11th Jan ( not too much in the way of gifts please) so a clear sky will be on the wish list, which is probably all I will get.

Alan
