No it is not enough if you want to get involved in reading other contributors to the weekly discussion topics. I found it was near double the estimation of time needed.

If you stick exactly to the course content material then the estimation is about right.

I was seriously considering signing up to the MOOC Orion course too - however I'm about to start a new job on Jan 5th - which is the same date the course starts and my new job will require some European travel over the next couple of months .... so I'm wondering whether I will have the time and motivation to do (and complete) the course. 

Has anyone else done this course before, or any similar MOOC courses?  It says 3 hours per week for 4 weeks duration ... do you have to be online at specific times of day/night to join web-casts / webinars, or can to do those 3 hours per week at any time of day/night that suits you?  Can you download the course material/videos and view when offline (e.g. when sitting on an airplane??)   Are there tests/exams/coursework that needs to be submitted for peer review / marking in order to pass the course and receive your credit & certificate at the end (assuming you want to pay to receive the credit/certificate of course...?)

I did the moons course last year there is a end of week test you do this in your own time the moons course was 8 weeks i did it in 5  so you can do it in your own time take longer or shorter as you seem fit to do. each test of about 25 questions fewer or more you will get three attempts from multi choice answers, I copied and pasted into word all course material and also downloaded the video's so yes you can do it offline.  I have signed for the orion course too.

I have the first weeks material for last years course to give you an idea its MS word 2007.

@Mike, you do these courses as a 'hobby' in your own time to suit, the last Moons course was broken down into weeks and about 20 modules per week, 15mins here n there could have worked. Yes on the webinars, but were not compulsory, yes on the tests, but only for personal satisfaction.

No, on any compulsory aspect, the previous Moons course was for personal interest and you could study/complete a module as many times as you wished. Some seemed to take it as a race, whilst others took their time and maybe did not complete the course in the given time, it was not a problem.

There were discussion threads much like here, again not compulsory.

For me this is all about enjoyment, and hopefully learning something more about the Night Sky.

thats bang on Rich, I did it quicker I suppose because I live a leisurely semi retired life style and have plenty of time on my hands since the moons course i have done about 5 others not astronomy based courses and enjoy doing them

No you dont need camera or equipment. :cool: or any books just your time is all thats required

Requirements

You do not need a professional telescope for this course, but you may find at least a pair of binoculars extremely useful.

No prior experience of the subject is required.

The 1st week does mention going out and taking photos. It also says a SLR camera is best but it doesn't say that you have to use one.

I think it's more about giving people a nudge to go out and try and find Orion with the naked eye.

I've read the pages for this week and watched the videos and I have to say I have enjoyed the 1st week.

I think I'll sign up for the moon course that starts in February too.
