Unless you want to stay enclosed within TheSkyX or leave the Windows environment, yes, I would say so.

In the Unix derivative section of the world you can use the INDI-lib incarnations to control everything. It is growing daily and has good architecture. As soon as I am done with my current software project I am going to give it a real try and write some drivers for it. Should be interesting!
